Default How to comfort a friend whose dog and cat were...

...put down and also lost home to foreclosure? I have a friend who is going through a terribly hard time. She lost her job 2 months back and then her house got foreclosed. Her golden retriever who was only 8 years old had to be put down because she could not afford his vet bills for IBS. I told her IBS is not life threatening but the dog was having frequent tummy pain and she decided to put him down. She then put her 3 year old cat down too. She has been crying a lot and says she feels guilty for putting dog down because she didn't have money to pay for vet. Meanwhile, how do I comfort her?

I don't know. I really wouldn't be friends with that type of person who just puts down their own dogs and cats for no physical reason instead of trying to find them another home even if just temporary. IBS is managed by diet, and outrageous vet bills shouldn't have incurred to treat it since there really are no medicines that cure it.

I mean she's still going to feel pain even if you try to comfort her but in the meantime treat her to a movie and dinner!Go rent some movies and have a girls day!Go for a walk in the park so the both of you can talk about her problems and try to find a solution. She could've at least found a good home for them or gave them to the shelter!

Just be glad she didn't have kids, she'd probably have put them down too. Sorry but there's just no good reason to put an animal down for money reasons. There's lots of alternative homes and options. That was a very selfish move on her part. Glad she's your friend and not mine. Sorry for her financial problems but I've hit rock bottom several times in my life and had to start over. Never once did I ever consider putting my animals down cos of my problems. It was hard but I was able to find temp housing for two and a friend took one. I started over and that was even harder due to the extra burden of paying back the help and keeping my head above water. I worked a full time and 2 part time jobs for many years but I did it! I just can't muster up sympathy for this...sorry.

She could have given her dog to a Golden Retriever Rescue group and they would have made sure the dog got the treatment it needed. She should feel bad for putting her dog down - why did she put her cat down too?You just don't kill off your pets when there are other solutions to the problem.Don't comfort her - There is a reason she is feeling guilty. I hope this really eats at her, so next time her pets need vet care, she won't just destroy them.I would suggest that you DO talk to her and convince her to not get any more animals though !!!!

You can comfort her by being there for her with open ears and heart. Sometimes it's not what you say, but that you are there to listen. I know when I have a *down* day, a friend that listens and doesn't make a judgment is what comforts me most. I'm not going through anything like your friend is, but I know it's better to talk things out than to hold things in. I can understand that she feels guilty, but a person has to do what a person has to do. Nobody can ever walk in another persons shoes until they have been in that exact same position themselves. Just be a good listener and I'm sure she will appreciate it.

Just stay with her. Comfort her. Just talk to her watch a few movies at your house on life and when it gets tuff it gets better. Life just throws drags here and there and not to worry. And as for the dog and cat... I don't know what to say about that she could have just gave her to someone else or took her to the shelter.... But don't make her feel bad about it she gone through allot!
