At the height of the housing boom six acres of land for $100,000 might have sounded like a great deal, but as the story usually goes, it was too good to be true.
Back in 2005, Bhola Sookram fell victim to a man who offered to sell him six acres of land in Levy County for $100,800. The seller, 40-year-old Amrit Chunulal (pictured below), drew up a contract which was signed by both parties in June of 2005. Chunulal collected a personal check for over $60,000 from the victim, but when the victim tried to set up appointments to view the property, the suspect was evasive and never got around to showing him the land.

Sookram gave the suspect a personal check for the rest of the money hoping to make good on his part of the contract, though Chunulal didn’t have the same plans. He never gave the victim additional information about the land, except that it was a total of six acres in Levy County.
The victim sought help from the legal system by filing a civil lawsuit against Chunulal and won through default when Chunulal did not appear in Court.
In May 2008, the victim reported the crime to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. As it turns out, there’s plenty of land in Levy County, but none of it belonged to Chunulal, according to the Levy County property appraiser. BSO investigators issued a warrant for his arrest charging him with one count of grand theft. Chunulal was taken into custody on October 16, and remains at the Main Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond.
BSO Economic Crime detectives fear Chunulal could have used his scam to steal money from other victims.
Anyone who thinks they’ve been victimized by Amrit Chunulal should call BSO Economic Crimes Detective John Murray at 954-321-4255 or Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS or To view links in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. Your post count is 0 momentarily..
