According to the New York State Attorney General’s Office, Dominic Niccoli is not a lawyer but has been playing one in landlord-tenant proceedings in City Court since at least October 2006.
Niccoli, 68, of South Village Boulevard, Van Buren, was arraigned Wednesday before City Judge Kate Rosenthal on eight misdemeanor counts.

Authorities learned of the alleged deception in January. In a Jan. 14 letter, Supervising City Judge Jeffrey Merrill wrote that he had learned Niccoli had admitted to Judge James Cecile that he was not a lawyer. Merrill ordered Niccoli not to make any further such court appearances or face the possibility of a contempt proceeding.
