How to title a car to someone who can't afford
insurance? My husband owns a car, that his ex wife was awarded in the divorce. He was to carry insurance and license tabs on it until January, 2009. At that point he was to turn the title over to her. Since she chooses to work a part-time, seasonal job which doesn't make enough to pay her bills, she declared bankruptcy in September 2006. We want to give her the car, but can't title to her without her having proof of insurance (in Michigan). We took it to court b/c we are tired of paying insurance on a car she was suppose to get in January. We can't remove the insurance b/c it's in his name and he could be held liable if someone is injured. Her bankruptcy lawyer said she can't afford it and needs a continuance. That was almost 2 months ago. Any suggestions on what we can do?We do not have possession of car. She drives it daily. No attornies involved in divorce. We can title the car to her, but she has 15 days to register it, and according to SOS in Michigan, need to provide proof of insurance for registration. What will happen to the car if she doesn't register it after 15 days or cannot provide proof of insurance?
