I'm seeing a lot of loan modification "coaches" starting to appear. They help you get started and show you sample packets that you need. I have no personal experience here so proceed cautiously but there are a few showing up.

You should definitely look into a company to do the processing for you and your time spent getting the deals. You will find this to be a much easier option. Also, no fees should be collected up front unless it is being put in escrow or given to a licensed attorney. Hope this helps.
