Mortgage companies and not being allowed to apply to...

...other mortgage companies? I just lost my job with a title company. I am looking for work within my field but someone told me I am not allowed to work with any other mortgage company within a year or it's breaking the law. Is this true? I signed a ton of things at hire, I knew nothing of this. Thanks.
