Can I hire my wife to qualify for a mortgage?

We're applying for a mortgage. My wife has a good credit history, I have none. I make most of the household income, while my wife doesn't make enough to get a mortgage. Can I hire her to increase her income? Is this legal?The bank doesn't want to give us a mortgage loan based on her income. And I cannot be on the loan without a credit score.
