Mortgage Help or Hurt Your Credit?

My wife and I recently closed on our new house last week and I was wondering if the mortgage helps or hurts our credit. I know after a while, making payments on time obviously helps, but in the short run, does having a mortgage hurt or help my credit over the next year or so? If anyone knows that would be great.
