Mortgage Question, Can You Explain?

What is mortgage interest due at closing, mean? If we are to close onJuly 30th, but don't close until August 5, why do I have to pay interest on those extra days? Why do I have to pay anything upfront on this? Can someone KINDLY explain? Thank you
