Why didn't anyone think of having the government just...

...pay off the "bad" mortgages? The lenders would get their money, people would stay in their houses. It would have probably cost less overall than the nonsensical bailouts made to the fat cats in the financial industry who constructed this underregulated house of cards in the first place.
