Default can you stop paying for mortgage and leave the house...

...at anytime? say you have a house which you pay a monthly payment to the morgage. however, you still can afford the mortgage payment because you are still working, but you decide to tell the mortgage that i will stop paying you anymore and i am moving from the house. what are the risks of doing so?

It doesn't matter if you are living there or not, you are still legally obliged to pay the mortgage. If you don't, you will default and the bank will be able to sell the house without your permission to recover their costs.

the lender will forclose on the home, at which point you lose all ownership rights. Your credit will be wrecked beyond quick repair unless you're wealthy. Why not sell the house, then move like every one else?

They will foreclose on the house and it affects your credit. You wont be able to buy another house for at least 3 years, but that time could change with all the mortgage issues these days. If you can afford why would you leave and stop paying?

You can do that but it will be on your credit record forever and you probably won't ever be able to get another mortgage
