Because if the bank goes under, it's taking alot of regular people down with it. The government has obliged the banking industry by enthusiastically deregulating it, now when the chickens come home to roost, they're not going to leave the bank's customers to hang out and dry.

Stupid isn't it. They do it because whack jobs will call them mean, uncaring, blind, etc. The "they are in the pockets of the rich" cry will most assuredly be heard. So politically, it is expedient. Besides it isn't like they are spending their own money to save Freddie, and Fannie.
