Default when you use a real estate agent, is it...

...necessary to have him on the paper, though I found the place on my own I had an interesting debate with my friend last night and wanted to see what others feel about this.

I was basically making a point that the agent should not be on the papers for the apartments that he/she did not work to find for you. If you are using an agent for couple of weeks to look at places and could not find the place you like, but let's say you were walking by a new construction that you liked and want it, I felt that it is perfectly normal to not have him on the paper in which case he will not be getting his 2% cut.

But my friend feels that its not business etiquette which I completely disagree as where do we draw the line. I feel he deserves his cut only when you like to buy the place that he shows you.

What do you guys think?
Again I want to make it clear as to where do we draw the line..which means should you put ur agent in if he spent 3 weeks and not put him if he showed you just two places so what is the bottom linel
After reading some more comments, I wanted to add some more clarifications. In this hypothetical example, let's say we did not sign any agreements with our agent.
