Default Is it possible for someone to be on food stamps...

...and Medicaid if they have a $300,000 mortgage? A friend of mine was telling me about a mutual friend of ours, and he said that, after losing her job at the beginning of the year, she said she's now on food stamps and Medicaid. I didn't understand how this was possible, because she lives in a $300,000 house that she owns by herself. She has a mortgage on it, and I can only imagine what her monthly payments are. He said she's scrapping by, and had to drain her 401K, but still, if she has money in her 401K to pay her mortgage, I would think that the Social Services people would call BS on her claim that she needs money for food. What do you think? Is she lying about being on food stamps and Medicaid?I agree the laws are stupid, no argument there. I just would've thought if they'd see her situation, they'd say if you own a $300,000 house, sell your house and use that money to buy food. Give us a call when that money runs out.

This is the whole problem with entitlement programs:ANYONE should be able to apply and get them.We all pay taxes (well, except for those on food stamps and Medicaid). We should all be able to get these programs if we want.

Yes it is because you home is not counted as income. Also not counted are gambling winnings such as a lottery win because that too is not a earned income.See a problem with the laws yet?Herb

Happens all the time. It someone depends on your state. Though most look at you bank statements, any income you have, your bills and depending your state your assets (such as cars). But I don't think any state looks as your house. I don't think 401K are not included in any states. In your friends case she might really need the help temporarily. But also it is clear how the laws can easily allow for fraud and misuse of public funds.
