Getting a Home Mortgage without a Home?

I recently heard of a friend getting a mortgage loan for a home and are already paying monthly payments on this loan, BUT the thing is they dont have a home yet. They are still looking around. Is this even possible? Dont you need a property to get the mortgage? Confused. Is this friend feeding me some BS or what? Thanks!
