The laws, legal ramifications, etc. that affect one can affect the other.

depends on the state, but almost every state requires 8hrs for mortgage brokers on mortgages.

realtors take up to 80hrs...and it includes a mortgage portion

Because being able to read deeds and the legal descriptions of properties is essential to being a mortgage broker.

Real estate courses aren't about how to sell real estate, they're about the legalities involved. Since you're part of the buying process and your documentation effects the legal documents involved, it's essential that you know how to do it correctly. You'll also have to take the state licensing exam as well. (I think this applies to all 50 states, but I know it applies to California.)

Mortgage borker is a loose term. It doesnt mean they have a "brokers license" they are a brokerage for mortgages. They shop hundreds of banks for the best program for their client. The only way to get a brokers license is to have some kind of a degree or two years full time experience as a licensed real estate agent. The problem is getting a brokers license takes alot more time, tests, and is very extensive opposed to getting a real estate license.
