Are I told to mortgage broker ?

Real estate agent ask me if I told to mortgage broker already. Does this mean I got preaproval from bank for certain amount of credit ? What is the right way to do so without much affecting my credit score and limit amount of exposing my social security # ? Can you recommend somebody in NY area ?
