Default newbie interest mortgage deduction question?

ive heard you can deduct the interest u pay on your mortgage....well, more like it just reduces your taxable base. so assuming this simple example...salary, $30,000, taxes deducted from paycheck per year are $10,000interest paid last year on home, $30,000so my taxable income is zero? so the $10K i paid in taxes out of my paycheck i get back as a refund?can i also deduct the real estate taxes i pay on the property (i think ive heard u can only deduct them from your federal income tax). continuing with the above example, if my taxable base is zero, and i pay $3000 in property tax, can i then get a total of $13K back in the form of a refund.thanks
