Default Where in the Consitution does it state that

it's the government's duty to help people get mortgages? Why did Fannie and Freddie exist in the first place? I don't think the Founding Fathers fought the British so the Federal government could give a implicit guarantee to mortgages. This bailout is a disgrace.avail_skillz's , thanks for the answer, so I guess it isn't in the Consitution because you didn't answer the question.I guess you think it's great that the government bailed out Fannie and Freddie to bail out all the Saudi, Chinese, and Russian investors. Great use of our government.

The other alternative is to have our economy completely collapse as people lose their houses and no one can borrow money because of mortgage failures. The government's right to control these mortgage companies is clearly stated in Section 8 of Article 1 of the Constitution of the United States. It is the power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce. These mortgage brokers would constitute interstate commerce.

It's not. Neither is it in the Constitution that the government should bail out Bear Stearns, but they did.

You are correct. This is only the beginnings of socialism. At this point, if we don't bail out Fannie and Freddie then there would be a run on the banks and this would spell real trouble.

Are you thinking the government should confine itself to promising a chicken in every pot, like in the good old days?

it isn't there.but neither are welfare programs, health insurance, abortion, national education, or the minimum wage.If we could actually enforce the 10th amendment, and get rid of a lot of that junk (thereby leaving up to the individual states, where it should be), it would be a giant leap for freedom in America.
