If it's not final yet, all you have to do is get current on your payments. Believe me, the mortgage company doesn't want your house. They want your money. They'll probably stop proceedings at any time if you get your payments up to date with them.
The only issue I see with your advice is if a homeowner is not in foreclosure you are dealing with collections department and they are not qualified to offer any service other than reinstate or an occasional repayment plan. Once foreclosure is initiated the game changes and you deal with a different skill set, which are not collectors.
